Housing across Devon is inadequate, in poor repair and expensive compared to wages and so we need to ensure the people of Devon have better housing. However, there are so many aspects to tackle the problem of poor housing and homelessness. So Devon Red Labour are going to be carrying out a public engagement across the area highlighting the problems and asking the public what their priorities are for action.
Even though the government has taken action to prevent revenge evictions there is clear evidence that without any efforts on enforcement the problem of poor housing repair will not be improving soon. But should efforts be directed towards building new housing or repairing the old? Should new housing be for owner occupiers, shared ownership or social rented housing? Can improvements to energy efficiency make houses better and more affordable for their occupiers? There are so many questions to answer that only by getting out and hearing the views of as many people as possible that we can come up with the best solutions for Devon’s housing problems.
The primary effort during the summer months will be street stalls and community picnics to get people talking about the topic and completing a short survey.
